Mastering Adult Swimming: Tips for Success

Swimming doesn’t have an age limit.

Whether you’re returning to the pool after years away, learning to swim for the first time, training for an event, or simply looking to become a more efficient swimmer, there is always something new to learn.

At Swimalyze, we believe swimming is about more than just completing lengths. It’s about understanding your stroke, building confidence, connecting with others, and enjoying the process of becoming a better swimmer.

Here are some of our top tips for making the most of your swimming journey.

1. Focus on Technique Before Speed

It’s tempting to measure progress by how quickly you can complete a length or how many metres you can swim.

But more isn’t always better.

Good swimming starts with good technique. Small changes to your body position, rotation, breathing or stroke can make a huge difference to how efficiently you move through the water.

Instead of always asking, “How can I swim faster?”, try asking:

“How can I swim better?”

Focus on quality movement and efficient technique first. Speed and endurance can follow.

2. Learn to Breathe With Your Stroke

Breathing is one of the biggest challenges for adult swimmers — and often one of the most overlooked.

If your breathing feels rushed or uncomfortable, it can affect everything else in your stroke.

Try to develop a breathing pattern that feels controlled and natural. Rather than holding your breath and then trying to take a huge breath, focus on continuously and comfortably exhaling into the water.

The goal isn't simply to breathe more.

It’s to breathe better.

3. Think About Your Body Position

The way your body sits in the water can have a huge impact on how much effort swimming takes.

A streamlined, balanced position helps reduce drag and allows you to move through the water more efficiently.

Think about:

  • Keeping your head and spine aligned

  • Avoiding unnecessary tension

  • Maintaining a strong but relaxed core

  • Allowing your body to stay connected through each stroke

Sometimes, swimming can feel harder simply because your body is working against the water rather than moving with it.

4. Stop Chasing Metres and Start Chasing Quality

One of the easiest traps for adult swimmers is believing that more distance automatically means a better session.

It doesn't.

You could swim 3,000 metres with poor technique and reinforce the same habits — or swim a shorter session with a clear technical focus and make meaningful progress.

Try giving each session a purpose.

Maybe today you're focusing on:

Rotation. Breathing. Body position. Catch. Rhythm. Efficiency.

When you know what you're working on, every length becomes an opportunity to improve.

5. Slow Down to Understand Your Stroke

Sometimes the best way to improve your swimming is to slow it down.

Swimming at maximum effort can make it difficult to notice what your body is actually doing.

Try swimming at a controlled pace and paying attention to how each movement feels.

Where does your hand enter the water?

Are you rotating enough?

Are you maintaining pressure on the water?

Are you rushing your recovery?

Developing awareness in the water is a huge part of becoming a better swimmer.

6. Use Feedback to See What You Can't Feel

One of the hardest things about swimming is that you can't always see what you're doing.

You might feel like you're holding a strong body position, but your hips could be dropping.

You might feel like you're getting a good rotation, but your movement may be limited.

This is where video analysis can be incredibly valuable.

At Swimalyze, we use above-water and underwater footage to help swimmers see their technique from a completely different perspective.

Because sometimes, the biggest breakthrough comes from seeing what you can't feel.

7. Don't Compare Your Journey to Someone Else's

Adult swimming brings together people with very different backgrounds, abilities and goals.

One swimmer might be training for their first triathlon.

Another might be returning to swimming after 20 years.

Someone else might simply want to swim comfortably for fitness.

There is no single definition of a “good swimmer”.

Focus on your own progress, celebrate the small improvements and remember that everyone in the pool is on their own journey.

8. Find Your Swimming Community

Improvement is easier — and more enjoyable — when you don't have to do it alone.

Swimming with others creates accountability, motivation and a sense of belonging. You can learn from the people around you, share experiences and celebrate progress together.

That’s what we want the Swimalyze community to be about.

A place where swimmers of all levels can learn, improve and enjoy swimming together.

Because sometimes, turning up for a session is easier when you know someone is waiting for you in the pool.

9. Set Goals That Actually Matter to You

Your swimming goals don't have to be about winning races or swimming faster.

Maybe you want to:

  • Swim 1,000m without stopping

  • Feel more confident in open water

  • Improve your freestyle

  • Become more efficient

  • Prepare for your first competition

  • Return to swimming after a break

  • Simply enjoy your sessions more

Whatever your goal, make it meaningful to you.

Progress becomes much easier to recognise when you know what you're working towards.

10. Enjoy the Process

Perhaps the most important tip of all:

Don't forget to enjoy swimming.

There will be sessions where everything clicks and sessions where nothing seems to work.

There will be days when you feel strong and days when you feel like you're fighting the water.

That's all part of the journey.

Swimming is a skill that can continue to develop throughout your life. There is always another detail to refine, another goal to work towards and another person to learn from.

And that's what makes it so rewarding.

Swim Better. Learn Together. Keep Improving.

At Swimalyze, we're passionate about helping swimmers understand their swimming — not simply telling them what to do.

Through coaching, analysis, feedback and community, our goal is to help you become a more confident, efficient and knowledgeable swimmer.

Whether you're just getting started or looking to take your swimming to the next level, there's always room to improve, and there's always a community to do it with.
